El Amo offers several variations of their tequila including a blanco, reposado and anejo. This reposado was the first in their line that we have been able to sample. It was purchased mainly to mix into margaritas but as always, we had to sip it neat to see what it’s all about.
The tequila was fairly priced at just above $20 for the 750ml bottle. This is inline with other similar offerings at our local liquor store chain. We felt the bottle design stood out well on the shelves and had the feel of a more expensive tequila.
The aroma is mild wood and spices. The spiciness carried over into the taste which also had hints of wood and caramel. There was a slight burn at the finish but overall a rather smooth offering.
Overall, El Amo makes a good mixing tequila due to the price and flavors. We have really started getting into spicy margaritas and this tequila worked perfect in our Jalapeno-Cilantro Margarita.
- 1 1/2 oz El Amo Reposado tequila
- 1 oz Margarita Texas Mix
- 3 small pieces of fresh jalapeno pepper
- 1/4 oz orange liqueur
- 8 cilantro leaves
Muddle cilantro and jalapeno pieces, add tequila and orange liqueur. Shake and strain over ice. Garnish with cilantro and pepper.
TIP: When first making this margarita, start with a small amount of jalapeno pepper to gauge your taste. Increase for a spicier drink.
